January 2011

what a difference a string makes

After four weeks of solid daily guitar practice, my fingertips now have calluses upon calluses.  It finally dawned on me that my strings probably need changing.  I stopped by the music store after work and asked for some help.  I picked out some Elixir polyweb - custom light strings / .011 -.052 gauge.  I believe the old ones I had were .010.  The guys swapped out the strings in about 15 min and I was out the door.  I had to pay quite a bit more since it's Vladivostok but I didn't have the experience of changing them myself and was nervous about messing the neck up.  After getting home and tuning it up, I have to admit the new strings feel so much better.  No slide squeaking, they're soft to the touch, and best of all, they feel lighter than my old ones.  I was afraid they'd be too big and bring a whole new level of pain to my practice.

So in future, if my playing is poor it won't be due to the strings.

Cost for the strings here in Vlad $46US - ouch  (Amazon $13US)

Labor $7US - decent

Since this was the same shop that fixed my electric for nothing, I had no problem paying extra as a courtesy for their help.  But I'll be buying strings online in future.

Song a week #3 - Three is a Magic Number

School House Rock's - "3 is a Magic Number" is my 3rd song a week cover.  Great song for beginners.  The barre chords did invoke some wear and tear on the fingers though.  I had to wait an extra day or two to let em heal up before recording it.

I'm still not crazy about the audio but this week's song can be heard a bit better than last week.  Mainly due to playing with my fingers rather than a pick.

Song a week #2 - Leaving on a Jet Plane

Alright, I'm back with the second song in my "Song a week" project.  This one is a great one for beginners and has some smooth chord changes and a fun strumming pattern.  Hope you like it as much as I had fun playing it.

I think I improved the sound a bit so you can hear my singing a little better.  (Maybe that's a bad thing)

Song a week for 2011 - #1 Horse with No Name \ America

I've been on a posting hiatus for awhile.  So if you're wondering what's been going on, I've been pursuing some other hobbies and taking a breaking from blogging.  But now that I'm back, I'm going to add something a little different to the blog and work more with video.  I'll be posting more videos than just me and the guitar.  So you can expect to see some with local Vladivostok footage, etc.

For starters, I'm going to learn a new guitar song every week for 2011 and post it here and on my youtube account.  I want to document my learning progression and see how well (if at all) I do over the course of the year.  So here's the first song for the year.  More songs to come every weekend.
